Egg in a Hole Recipe

Omelette in a Hole

Eggs on toast is a classic breakfast dish but then regular is boring so let’s perk it up with a nutritious Egg in a Hole Recipe. Sometimes, toast and eggs end up as my dinner on days that I actually hate cooking for myself. A wholesome omelette nestled snugly and cooked inside a thick slice of bread is a creative way to use an egg, Omelette in a hole! A simple, tasty and healthy substitute for eating an omelette that won’t fall apart. As the old saying goes, breakfast is the most important meal of the day and I follow it diligently. We all have our own favourite breakfast recipes, whether it is idly, dosa, poori, paratha, pancakes, bacon, hash browns or egg in a hole!

Eggs are Healthy

Eggs are a fantastic source of valuable protein that help build and maintain muscle mass. They are packed with nutrients and contain a range of vitamins and minerals like Vitamin B12, Vitamin D and iron.

No Cholestrol Monster

You can certainly forget what your doctors might have told you – there’s no need to dodge eating eggs for fear of cholesterol. It is now known that there is nothing called cholesterol, rather be careful of saturated fat. Eating five to six or seven eggs a week will only do you a world of good!

Kale, the super food

Here’s where we get to the true super food in the recipe. A handful of kale added to the eggs add a nutritious punch you’ll have yourself a well-balanced meal within minutes. I find every excuse to use my garden fresh Kale.  Kale provides a truckload of vitamins and minerals; this super food is packed with phytonutrients such as flavonoids and glucosinolates as well

What is Egg in a Hole?

As luck would have it, I have got a recipe today that puts an exceptional twist to your common breakfast fare—and it is easy too. And don’t worry, it still holds good, when it compares to your favourite breakfast foods. The base of this Egg in a Hole Recipe, is a bread slice and onion, peppers, mushroom and kale tossed in butter and herbs and enriched with cheese. Although I am sharing my recipe, you can innovate and include your own ingredients.Earlier I have made egg in a ring which you can check out here.

Ingredients

2 slices of white bread

2 eggs

4 tbsp. Mozzarella cheese

2 tbsp. chopped kale

2 tbsp. onion chopped fine

3 tbsp. butter

2 tbsp. yellow, red peppers

2 tbsp. mushroom thinly sliced

½ tsp. Mixed herbs

ÂĽ tsp. chilli flakes

Salt to taste

Method

The base of this Egg in a Hole Recipe, is a bread slice and onion, peppers, mushroom and kale tossed in butter and herbs and enriched with cheese.

Firstly, take the bread slices and cut out the inside leaving the crust.  Keep aside to be used later.

In the meantime, chop up the onions, peppers and mushroom, finely.

Add a tablespoon of butter in a pan over medium-high heat. Once the butter starts to sizzle, toss the onion, mushroom, peppers and sauté them. Add the kale at the end. Keep stirring them with a wooden spoon until they are browned to your desired level.

Add the mixed herbs, salt, pepper and mix well.

Once it’s ready turn off the heat.

You can make the omelette in the same pan or use another.

Add butter and place the bread crusts on it. Spoon the veggies into the centre of the bread.

Next, crack your eggs in a bowl and give a good whisk. Add a pinch of salt and pepper. Pour the egg mixture over the cooked veggies and into the middle of the bread slice.

Sprinkle the cheese over the egg. Finally, put the sliced out bread on top of the cheese and press it down slightly.

Once the egg is cooked cook, carefully work a spatula under the bread. Flip it over to cook on the other side. The egg should be cooked nicely and fill the bread totally. Once the other side is done, turn off the heat and serve.

Although this recipe uses many of the same ingredients as any regular breakfast, this is a fun way to play with the arrangement. As I revealed before, this recipe is very adaptable and I added a few garlic chives too.

This omelette-in-the-hole version is a fun and easy way of coaxing anybody who is shying away from eating the same old breakfast every day.

Do not let the omelette become really brown

Add any cheese you like.

Ingredients
  

  • 2 slices of white bread
