Long-distance travel has become the trend. Most Indians who visited their home town during the summer vacation, have now set out to jet-set around the world. Travellers are not ignorant of how travel affects the environment. Air travel has soared and this results in high CO2 emissions. Tourism leads to intense pollution, wearing away of soil and pressure on endangered species. Make the right choices. Opt for sustainable or sensible travel with the least amount of footprint. Thankfully there are a few ways to reduce the damage caused or decrease your carbon footprint. Here are 3 Valuable Tips for Sustainable Travel.
3 Valuable Tips for Sustainable Travel
Choose Sustainable transport
1. Travel to a destination that is not very far from your home.
If you decide to go for sustainable travel, firstly, choose a place close by. The mode of transport influences your decision on sustainable tourism. India is a spectacular country, chose the road less travelled for a memorable holiday. On a holiday abroad or thousands of miles away, you will certainly book a flight. A holiday in the state presents a sustainable prospect. Pick the hills close to you rather than the Himalayas, the beach, 100 km away compared to the beaches of Goa.
2. Travel by Train or Bus is Green Travel
Once you have decided on the place, select a green mode of transport. Travel by train saves 90% CO2 emissions. Bus and Car travel is also becoming a progressive option as the expressways reduce the time. Bus and Car don’t even emit half of the CO2 emissions compared to air travel.
3. Make Cognizant Choices When You Book A Flight
Obviously, train or bus travel is difficult if you opt to travel to Hawaii. Today, it’s easy to hop on a plane for speedy and economical transport.
a. Direct Flights Are Expensive
Flights with transfer save money but the indirect route leads to longer distances and a greater amount of CO2 Emissions. So try to book a direct flight or one with few transfers.
b. Fly economy class
Business-class denotes more leg space, comfort and luxury. One business class seat takes up almost four of an economy. Naturally fewer people can travel and the CO2 emissions are going to increase to a greater extent. Be mindful, give up the comfort and fly economy class.
Make mindful choices, once you reach your destination. Make conscious choices at your destination. Book rooms in a homestay or farm stay which are eco-friendly. Do not litter decrease your waste, while you appreciate the ethos and nature around you. Be accountable for your actions.
Our ancestors left us a green world and the onus is now on us to sustain it for the next generation. We don’t have to be involved and engage in grandiose campaigns or slog to make a difference. Small acts by each one of us will add up to millions, which is enough to transform Mother earth.

Lovely post. When we think about travel, we don’t pay much attention to these details. But your post makes complete sense. We don’t have to necessaruly do something out of out comfort zone. But something thoughtful can go a long way.
This is so true! Often we miss out on nearby places and lose out on beautiful locations. A very valid point !
There are some very cheap flight sites instead of booking from the common sites you can choose them. Another tip could be preferring the local transport in the place and booking everything beforehand.

The concept of sustainability is appreciated in most of the area of life and travel is no exception. Great pointers especially looking by near by places which we miss out most of the times
This is good information to have. I agree that the more sustainable our travel choices the better it is for the environment. Sadly this is a tight rope to walk. We travel the world to open our minds, be inclusive and even tolerant. The lesser we travel the smaller our world-view and this is especially true in today’s social media savvy world where lies seem to be jetsetting around the globe.
I think air travel is one of the biggest contributor to the pollution. So it makes sense if people visit nearby places via road during vacations , if possible. A thoughtful post indeed.
Being mindful in our choices is surely going to make a huge difference to the environment. This blog post is a perfect reminder for us to make choices wisely.
This is a very relevant but yet overlooked topic. Why not maintain sustainability in planning our travels, when we aim for a sustainable lifestyle!
