Baby Shower Or Godh Bharai Games

Baby Shower Or Godh Bharai Games

G for Godh Bharai for the #BlogchatterA2Z challenge. Yes, my theme is summer, and I know that many around me are going to have their Baby Showers. This post is for those who want new ideas for games. Baby Shower Or Godh Bharai Games has been around for ages. A baby shower is a universal tradition that is followed in almost every culture and all parts of the world. Names are different, maybe, but the purpose, involvement, and excitement are the same.

We know Indian baby shower as Godh Bharai. In Hindi, godh bharai means to ‘fill the lap’ with abundance. It is a great way to pamper the mom to be in her third trimester. Indians consider an addition to their family as a blessing from God and so celebrate all such occasions with great enthusiasm.

What is Godh Bharai

Baby Shower Or Godh Bharai ceremony is performed universally. Godh Bharai is an Indian term for Baby Shower. The customs and rituals may differ, but the basic premise is to shower the mom-to-be with the bountiful joys of motherhood. The blessings and the welcome of the unborn child are the same. Like most families, the firstborn is very special to Indian families. A baby shower is a special way to celebrate the mom-to-be and her new life.

I had a very traditional Godh bharai aeons ago, but now the concept of a Baby Shower has ushered and infused new themes and features. The godh bharai ceremony is usually a time when most womenfolk in the family and friends have a lot of fun and enjoy themselves.

Blessings from Family and Friends at Baby Shower Or Godh Bharai Games

The guests come and bless the glowing mom with their blessings and gifts, which would help the parents-to-be. In most communities, we hold the ceremony when the mother-to-be completes her seventh month of pregnancy. We believe that after the seventh month, the baby and mother are in a safe period. We see that the pregnancy will head to birth smoothly from here on and that is the reason they hold the baby shower in the seventh month of pregnancy.

Traditionally, godh bharai is a ‘ladies-only’ affair, but these days the expectant fathers are hands-on parents and want to be a part of every ritual. Typically, the elders provide an elaborate dress to the mom-to-be and decorate her with jewellery, bangles, and make-up.

We fill the lap of the radiant mom-to-be with gifts, bangles, bindi, red ribbon, nail paint, lipstick, and a scarf. Seven bags of dry fruits with Almonds, Dates, Walnuts, Cashew nuts, Dry Coconuts, Pistachios, and Raisins are also given. The mom-in-law places all this in her lap. All the ladies in the family adorn the bride-to-be. We Punjabis celebrate heartily and hardly need an excuse to break into song and dance. We have songs for every occasion.

HE OR SHE

In the West, it is common to know the sex before itself and guests usually bring appropriate gifts for the baby. But here in India, it is always a surprise and a guessing game until the birth.

A cake idea for Indian baby showers can be a baby footprint; one blue and the other pink if you do not know if it is a boy or girl. Another can be a He or She.

Photo Booth for Baby Shower Or Godh Bharai Games

Have a photo booth with baby props: it’s a boy, it’s a girl, feeders, a team boy, team girl in blue and pink colours. An advice book in which all the guests are asked to write down their advice for the new mom-to-be.

Baby Shower Games

Here are some innovative games for a baby shower-

1. The Ice Breaker: “Don’t say “baby!”

Clothes Pegs For Don’t Say Baby Game

What you’ll need: Clothespins that are clipped to the dress quickly.

How to play: Each guest gets a clothespin to wear as they enter. When all the guests arrive, they should be told that they cannot utter the word “baby.” Whoever hears a guest say “baby” gets to steal her pin. The guest with the most pins at the end of the shower wins.

2. Baby Word Scramble

What you’ll need: Paper, pens, jumbled words

Unscramble the baby words as quickly as possible to win a prize.

3. Passing the Dirty Diaper

Passing the dirty diaper game

You will need- 4-5 disposable diapers, chocolate sauce, and music. Pour thick chocolate sauce into 2 or 3 diapers. You can even use Nutella.

How to Play: Seat everyone in a circle and hand out the diapers. Play the music and ask everyone to pass on the diapers. Stop the music randomly and whoever has the dirty diaper is out. In the end, the one left with the clean diaper is the winner.

4. Guess Mom-to-be’s belly size

Guess mom to be belly size game

What you’ll need: A ball of satin ribbon, scissors

How to play: Each guest cuts a piece of ribbon they think will fit around the centre of Mom-to-be’s belly, then takes turns to see who’s closest to her size. The guest whose ribbon length fits the best wins!

Baby Shower Or Godh Bharai Games

1 Game: My water broke

My water broke game

Take a few baby dolls and freeze them on ice. Call out a few members who want to play the game and hand out one ice cube to each one. The one whose ice melts first has to say My Water Broke and he/she is the winner.

2. Game…Spin the bottle

Another interesting game with some punishments. Ask a few guests to volunteer to play. Each has to spin the bottle and when the bottle stops, they have to do whatever is written on the card and you can gift each a chocolate.

3. Game: Word Search Game

Search the word baby

Word search is a simple game like solitaire, which you can download from the google store. Just ask your guests to find how many times we mentioned BABY in the grid and circle it. The first to finish and hand over the paper is the winner.

4. Game: Baby Shower Crossword

A great way to brush up on your baby’s vocabulary. Whichever guest hands over the completed crossword first is the winner.

5. Game: Baby Tambola.

Housie or tambola is a crowd favourite game and any number can play it. Just get a custom made ticket made with baby stuff. I made this game.

  1. You can have the top three pictures as the top line and the bottom three as the bottom line.
  2. The first three pics are in one line- the winner has to say I Am Hungry
  3. The next three are the second line-winner has to say Change My Diaper

3. When a guest finishes the full ticket and says “She He What will it be?”
