6 Ways to Teach Kids About Sustainability

6 Ways to Teach Kids Sustainability

“Make it a better place, for you and for me, and the entire human race,” is a song we all keep humming. We’re all cognizant of the impact we have on our world. We parents are trying to salvage what we can, but we should equip our children with the knowledge of sustainability so that we can make our earth a better place for them and the future. Involve them in breathing on a greener planet, with a lifestyle that protects it. 6 Ways to Teach Kids About Sustainability is a great base to start with.

6 Ways to Teach Kids About Sustainability

1. Go Green to Teach Green

Be a role model so that children learn sustainability as a way of life or habit. Reduce your mobile and TV usage and spend that time discussing nature around you. Shift to using only reusable products instead of disposables, while sharing why it would be good with your child. Metal straws or metal bottles replace plastic bags with washable, natural fibre bags.

2. Assign Chores

We Indians have had the luxury of house help for a few more years. We should give kids chores to make them independent and to teach them life skills like sustainability. Start off with teaching them how to store groceries in paper or cloth bags while explaining how plastic is clogging the earth in landfills and the seas.

3. Help with Laundry

You can ask them to load and unload the laundry from the washing machine. Show them why it is necessary to run the washing machine only when necessary, citing the importance of saving power and sustaining energy.

4. Weekend DIY and Recycling

Make fancy cards or craft items with empty cartons and other products that end up in the waste bin. Show them how to segregate kitchen waste and other waste. Explain how you can make compost with kitchen waste. There are different colour bins for different garbage. Reward them if they do it right.

5. Read Books about the Planet

Buy them colourful books about our green earth. Reading to children is the easiest and best way of explaining the importance of sustainability. Have mom and daughter reading sessions or dad and daughter, or vice versa.

6. Plant a tree or a mini Greenhouse

Plant a tree with your child if you have space. The other option would be to create a mini glass house in a jar or a goldfish bowl. You can even grow micro-greens in a cardboard box or an egg tray.

6 Ways to Teach Kids About Sustainability

Make it fun learning and interactive, encouraging them to question. Now that you have the tips, kick start your coaching and empower them to make the world a better place for us and for the generations to follow.

We all talk about sustainability but as graciously outlined by you , it all starts in our homes. Starting young inculcates deep values and the simple chores are age appropriate and educative for young minds.
