What is Sustainable Fashion?
There has been an upheaval and innovation in the fashion industry. New is the buzzword, but the latest slogan is sustainable fashion. Designers by far have been burrowing into eco-friendly materials and the process of the finished product. But the influence of major fashion trends that are not sustainable, damage by raising carbon emissions and chemical wastes.
You can change the fashion industry with the choices you make.
1. Shop at Thrift Stores
Yes, there are thrift stores in India, and they are online. Buying pre-owned clothing will lessen the demand for brand-new fashion products. This leads to less clothing landing in the garbage dump. Thrift stores have pre-loved designer pieces that are in smacking condition. Bear this in mind and get designer dresses at a bargain price. You may have to browse a bit more to find THE dress for you, but it is worth the hassle. My daughter, who is a millennial, introduced me to thrift stores, a ray of hope for the future.
2. Persist and Love your present wardrobe
New fashion trends are irresistible, but pause a moment and take a re-look at your closet. Do you genuinely need a new dress that will overload your bursting wardrobe? What are you buying? Will you wear it for 20 times?”
3. Repair or Remodel Clothes
The textile industry has a lot of waste, do not add to it. Repair or upcycle your clothes instead of discarding them if they need mending or they bore you. A ripped-off button or a small tear is not a reason to dump the dress. Mend it or turn it into a tote bag, table mat, napkin or even a cushion cover. You can cut a long dress to make it a blouse or a shirt and a jean turned into shorts.
4. Less Wash, Less Wear and Tear
When you wear a dress for a little while, don’t throw it into the laundry bag for a wash. Just air it out and then put it back into your wardrobe. You need not wash all your clothes after one wear. You can wear Jeans for a week without a wash. Do less laundry as every cycle of your washing machine guzzles gallons of water. You can be more sustainable if you use eco-friendly detergents to do your laundry.

5. Reduce Buying Fast Fashion
Like Fast food, Fast Fashion is also something that you need to cut down on. Trends come and go, make your fashion statement. Fast fashion leads to major water pollution and material wastage, and above all, the workers in the industry get a pittance.
6. Reduce and Recycle
Extend the life of your clothes to reduce your shopping for fashion. When you are done with it, pass it on to a sibling or a friend. If they refuse, then you can hand it over to a thrift store where someone else can afford and wear it.
7. Spend on Wardrobe Staples
A pair of jeans is a must-have. Everyday wear, whether it is classic Levis or a high-waisted pair, you will not tire of it. A white crisp shirt goes best for any pair of jeans. A pair of comfortable sneakers would complete this endless ensemble. The “little black dress” is a classic wardrobe staple.
8. Shop for Natural Fabrics
Polyester, nylon, rayon or acrylic fabrics are detrimental to the environment. Virgin synthetics originate from fossil fuels. They take centuries to break down. Natural materials like cotton, bamboo hemp or silk are eco-friendly and use less water and pesticides. It is best to indulge in them.
