Shillong-Scotland of the East
After the thrill of Bogor’s resort and zeroing, we left for Shillong early morning. We know it as Shillong-Scotland of the East. We were put up in Ri Kynjai resort, which is 25kms away from the city. The drive was 295 km and took nearly 7 hours. The journey was tiresome, as the Traveller vehicles provided for us were uncomfortable, with small seats and no leg space. We checked into our resort for the next three days. Believe it or not, the moment we set our feet onto the lake-view cottages, the earth shook! Yes, it was a tremor and the first in Ri Kynjai, according to the bellboy. An earth-shattering welcome indeed.
Ri Kynjai-Shillong-Scotland of the East
Ri Kynjai means “Serenity by the Lake” in Khasi. It is a perfect escape from urban life, with luxurious cottages, Khasi spa treatments, local cuisine, hill treks, boat rides, island picnics, and access to the Shillong Golf Course. This boutique resort is perfect for a relaxed holiday and it is cosy for honeymooners or couples who are looking for privacy. The cottages showcase traditional Khasi architecture combined with modern amenities. It overlooks Umiam Lake. The lake-view cottages are on wooden stilts and combine traditional Khasi thatch with modern gables.
The main block, ingeniously built into a cliff, provides elegant rooms with spectacular views. The dining room, bar, and conference facilities overlook the lake, while the Spa offers traditional Khasi massage and Aqua Therapy. After a long day of travel and sightseeing, I took a long soak in the jacuzzi in the cottage. I fully used it for three days and boy, was it relaxing! Memories of Shillong-Scotland of the East.
Party time
After our tiring drive down and a languorous time in the Jacuzzi, we gathered together, for it was party time. The cottages are huge and could accommodate 15 of us partying together. After a photoshoot, it was time for some crazy games. I won one game and that was such a thrill. Then it was time for Antakshri with some really wild old Telugu hits that even I was familiar with. Thankfully, there were few people around or they would have shooed us away, hearing us singing tonelessly. Next was shaking a leg to the music provided. When in the company of friends and away from the daily routine, we let our hair down and forget that we are all grandmammas!
After all that excitement and a lavish dinner, we all trudged to our beds and crashed. It was again an early morning call with a hurried breakfast.
Umiam Lake-Shillong-Scotland of the East
Umiam Lake, also known as Badapani, encompasses a vast expanse of serene beauty, embraced by dense coniferous forests and rolling hills. The acronym Badapani aptly captures the essence of this picturesque destination. Small islands dot the lake, adding charm to the landscape. The lakeshore offers a pleasant stroll and the chance to witness picnics, water sports, and recreation.
Our journey led us on a captivating walk from Ri Kyn Jai, immersing us in the splendid wonders of nature. The path was adorned with vibrant wildflowers and majestic towering trees, painting a picturesque route that gradually unveiled the breathtaking azure waters of the lake.
When planning your stay in Shillong, I would highly recommend considering accommodations in one hotel near the lake or even at Ri Kynjai, as we did. This allows you to fully immerse yourself in the area’s tranquillity and relish the proximity to the captivating Umiam Lake, guaranteeing an unforgettable experience.
Situated approximately 16.5 kilometres away from Shillong-Scotland of the East, city centre, Umiam Lake welcomes visitors from 9 am to 5 pm daily, offering ample time to bask in the tranquil surroundings. To reach the lake, we chose the convenience of a private cab hired from Police Bazaar, ensuring a hassle-free and enjoyable journey.

Elephant Falls
Elephant Falls, in the captivating East Khasi Hills district of Upper Shillong, is undeniably one of the most picturesque destinations in the area. With its three enchanting tiers, this mesmerizing waterfall showcases the breathtaking beauty that Shillong offers. The Britishers aptly named it Elephant Falls because of the remarkable resemblance of a massive adjoining rock to an elephant. Unfortunately, this distinct rock formation is no longer visible today, as it shattered in an earthquake.
Descending the steep steps towards the falls, I discovered benches. They were strategically placed on each tier, providing an opportunity to catch my breath. The rocks themselves featured intriguing cave-like crevices, creating ideal photo opportunities. Graceful ducks skimming across the water added an elegant touch to the scene.
As I ventured closer, I noticed garbage baskets that resembled the tea baskets commonly used by tea pickers. Seizing the chance for a creative pose, I playfully leaned against one of these baskets, pretending I strapped it to my back like a tea picker’s load. All the while, my camera shutter relentlessly captured the magical moments unfolding before me.
Photo-shoot @ Shillong-Scotland of the East
The vibrant colours of the local Khasi attire proved irresistibly tempting, prompting us all to don these traditional garments and indulge in a photoshoot extravaganza. The intricate dress and jewellery were truly eye-catching, and the elaborate headgear worn by the women exuded a sense of grandeur. Striking a pose with a pot in hand and smiling into the camera was an absolute delight.
Upon entering the Elephant Falls area, a lively flea market greeted us. It was showcasing an array of traditional crafts and weaves crafted by the locals. We embarked on a brief retail therapy session. In my short shopping spree, I bought a beautiful handwoven shrug and a delicate scarf, both serving as delightful mementoes of my visit.

Nohsngithiang Waterfall
The fourth-highest plunge waterfall in India, Nohsngithiang, is nestled within the scenic East Khasi Hills district. This captivating waterfall comprises a cluster of seven distinct falls, cascading next to one another. Locally known as Nohsngithiang Falls or Mawsmai Falls, they also referred to it as Seven Sisters Falls. We ascended the winding ghat road, and to our awe, we found ourselves enveloped in clouds. Our vehicle took us higher, piercing through the cotton-like clouds that draped the landscape. It was like traversing through a celestial land, driving through nothing short of heaven itself.
Cherrapunji
Unfortunately, during our visit, we couldn’t witness the awe-inspiring 315-meter high thunderous cascade, as it was summer. The waters of the falls plunge down the perilous limestone cliffs of the Khasi Hills. Thus creating a mesmerizing sight as they descend into a deep valley. During sunrise and sunset, they swathe the surrounding landscape in a golden hue. It illuminates the crystal clear waters and bathes them with radiant splendour. Much like many other spots in Shillong, this place is a paradise for photographers. Seven of us lined up for a memorable photo at the waterfalls. A fellow tourist who clicked us referred to us as the actual Seven Sisters.
These falls are in Mawsmai village, East Khasi Hills, Cherrapunji, Meghalaya, and Nohsngithiang Waterfall offers a breathtaking spectacle. It is advisable to visit during the rainy season or shortly after to witness the full fury of the falls. The waterfall showcases its full might and splendour. It promises to leave you captivated by its majestic beauty and the enchanting surroundings of the East Khasi Hills.
Tip: The best time to visit is the rainy season or soon after to see the full fury of the falls.Timings: 6:00 AM-6:00 PM

Dawki & Umngot River
The emerald crystal clear waters of the Umngot River make Dawki a virtual paradise. A town on the international border between Bangladesh and India it is a thriving trading centre. But its main highlight is the stunning British-era suspension bridge over the river, which puts it on the list of most popular places to visit in Shillong and Cherrapunji.
Flanking the southeastern border of Meghalaya, Dawki is a lovely little town located nearly 82 km away from Shillong. Cradled in the laps of the Jaintia Hills, the thrilling drive to Dwaki is littered with vines and gorges. The highlight of this town is the magical, emerald-coloured river Umngot that snakes through it. We believe it to be one of the cleanest rivers in India, and that’s truly admirable.
It flows between the Jaintia and Khasi Hills, right into Bangladesh. Boating in its waters is an enchanting experience and makes you feel as if you’re afloat a crystal glass! Dawki is also a host of adventures like kayaking, camping, zip-lining, and snorkelling. It is a fairytale world, and amongst the loveliest places to visit in Cherrapunji.
Here are recommendations for the top places to visit when in Dawki.

Food in Shillong
A travelogue on the exotic northeast is never complete without highlighting the culinary delights of the region. One dining experience that stood out during my visit was at Sao Aoim restaurant in Ri Kynjai. This restaurant is a perfect blend of modernity and antiquity, adorned with local artefacts and fascinating trivia displayed on its walls. What caught my attention at every table were the stunning Turmeric Curcuma Longa flowers, members of the ginger family, with their white blossoms elegantly tipped in pink. These flowers beautifully thrive around the resort, even dotting the ground as we strolled towards the lake.
The breakfast buffet at Sao Aoim was a true gastronomic delight. From the choice of bread and eggs to the extraordinary Pu maloi, black rice cakes served with locally made jam, every dish was a treat for the taste buds. They made the scrambled eggs to perfection, and the caramel custard was undoubtedly the pièce de résistance. The assortment of halwa, sevaiyaan, baked bread, and cupcakes was a feast for both the eyes and the palate.
Shillong-Scotland of the East-Foodie Experience
For dinner, we ordered à la carte, a task that proved challenging, with a group of 15 famished women. The cocktails were perfect and added a zing to the night. The exceptional service provided by the restaurant staff made certain that our orders were handled efficiently, and we were served exactly what we had requested.
Overall, the dining experience at Sao Aoim in Ri Kynjai added an extra layer of culinary delight to our travelogue, leaving us with unforgettable memories of exquisite flavours and impeccable service.
