Jamun Popsicles/ Black Plum Popsicles #BlogchatterA2Z is for the letter J.
Black plum, java plum, Jamun or Jambul, what’s in a name? I love the dark wine colour and I made Jamun Popsicles just because it’s my favourite colour. Childhood memories of foraging for fallen Jamun under the tree are vivid. When we were more adventurous, we plucked them off anyone’s tree and made a dash for it with our booty. I have planted a jamun tree right outside my house and am waiting for it to fruit. I remember Mom buying them for one rupee a pound and now it’s available for a king’s ransom; INR400 for a kilo! At that time, we never knew the nutritional value or benefits like we do today; Jamun is good for diabetics. Mom used to wash them and sprinkle some salt, toss and serve. And the thrilling part was when the tongue would turn a dark purple. We used to compete to see whose tongue was the darkest.
Golas versus Jamun Popsicles
We never got ice golas here in the market, and Mom used to make me ice golas with Roohafza. Believe me, they were the happiest days of my life. Wish I could go back to a time machine. I have eaten one in Delhi and never found one anywhere else. That is why I decided to make them at home. It is like eating a frozen jamun fruit.
Easy to make Jamun Popsicles/ Black Plum Popsicles
Popsicle making is so easy and I wonder why nobody makes them at home with natural fruits which are healthy. Teaching your kids to make them and your summer would be sorted. Just blend the fruit with sugar and pour it into moulds. You don’t need to buy any fancy moulds; just use disposable paper or plastic cups and place a wooden stick in the centre.
Recipe for Jamun Popsicles/ Black Plum Popsicles
Ingredients:
500 gms Jamun / Black Plum
2 cups Water
1 small cup of sugar
Few mint leaves (optional)
Method:
First, wash and deseed all the Jamun. Keep 2 tbsps of chopped jamun aside.
Next, take the rest in a blender and blitz with water, sugar and mint. After that, strain the juice as it could be pulpy and squeeze half a lime.
If you are making them for kids, then do not add lemon juice or mint. They may not relish it.
Now, add the chopped jamun to the moulds and pour the juice into them.
Finally, place the wooden stick in the centre. And if it doesn’t stick, then try it after putting it in the fridge for an hour.
Freeze for 3-4 hours or leave it overnight.
If you do not have a Popsicle mould, do not fret. Freeze the popsicles in small steel glasses or disposable plastic or paper cups.
Once the wooden stick is in, cover the cups with aluminium foil. Make a tiny slit in the centre and push the ice cream stick through it.
To remove the Popsicle from a steel glass, just run it underwater. If you are using paper cups or plastic cups, then the lollies will slip out easily. In case they don’t just take scissors and cut them all around.
You will love the taste of these natural Jamun Popsicles/ Black Plum Popsicles. Especially when the bits of fruit crunch under your teeth. It is like eating a frozen fruit of jamun or Black Plum.
