Mental health is all about what you do and not what you know. First acceptance and then action is the cue to healing. Take a holistic approach wherein you must integrate lifestyle with your mind-body. Inadequate sleep can amplify the brain’s anticipatory reactions, which increases overall anxiety, according to research. Here are 10 Quick Tips to Help Your Anxiety.

A relaxed night’s sleep is half the battle won and the rest would be a healthy diet and exercise.

If you are going through anxiety, then you know the usual feelings of choking, throbbing heart, sweaty hands, or shaky legs. These quick tips will make you feel better.

Live a relaxed, healthier, and happier life with these calming practices-

1. Deep breathing.

This is the sure-shot way to calm you down. If you cannot do it yourself then follow the instruction on a video – Meditation for Anxiety by Adrienne. Focus on your breath and breath in with your belly out and deep breathe out with your belly sucked in.

Sit on a chair or bed. Take a deep breath in on a count of four. Hold your breath for a count of seven. Exhale for a count of eight. Hold for a count of three and start again.

Concentrate totally on your breath and ignore everything else. It will distract your mind from your anxiety.

Refrain from the urge to follow the various thoughts trying to overpower your mind and just focus on your breath. The mind will wander but instantly return it to the breath.

Repeat this as long as your mind stays calm. Practice this daily for the best results. You will surely feel relaxed.

2. Indulge Yourself

Treat yourself to a mani-pedi, haircut, or a relaxing massage. When you look good you feel good. You don’t have to go to an expensive spa or salon. Get someone to do it at home for a quarter the price.

 3. Get a good night’s sleep

It is not impossible to sleep. Take a relaxant, if necessary, after consulting your doctor. Sleep deficiency is a cause of anxiety. Insufficient shuteye can intensify the brain’s proactive responses, heightening anxiety levels. A good night’s sleep leads to emotional stability.

4. Wake Up Early.

In this fast-paced life, it is better to wake up early rather than rush through your morning chores. Wake up relaxed with a prayer of gratitude. Take a deep breath and set a relaxed pace for the day.  Avoid caffeine, sugar, and processed foods. Too much caffeine can trigger heart palpitations, panic, or anxiety attacks. A sugar rush also leads to the same effects.

5. Exercise!

Exercise is an antidote for anxiety remedies. Agreed it is difficult to exercise when you are going through anxiety, but it is not impossible. Exercise clears the mind, boosts the endorphins, and helps you sleep better.

6. Healthy Diet

A healthy diet can reduce anxiety. Have two glasses of warm water or green tea first thing in the morning. A hearty breakfast will keep your energy levels intact. Toast and egg, idli, dosa, or poha are a few healthy suggestions.

7. This too shall pass

Nothing is permanent in life. Same with your restlessness, feelings of fear, agitation, and doom. You may be swarmed with negative thoughts, but they are temporary. Will yourself to feel better. Do not let negative emotions overpower you.

8. Confront negative feelings

Bear in mind that thoughts pave the way for feelings. Negative thoughts will lead to negative feelings, which in turn will lead to negative deeds. For most people suffering from anxiety, mornings are tough. You may wake up and think that you cannot finish your article today and may want to stay in bed all day. You may feel lazy, anxious, and listless. Map out your mornings and slowly get into the rhythm of the day. Start a daily journal. Write a few lines about your feeling in the morning and before going to bed. You shall find that most of your negative feelings were created in your mind and as the day goes on you will have accomplished most of the tasks you set for yourself. What does this prove? You have the power to uncreate the negative thoughts that your mind created.

9. Practice Gratitude

Appreciate what you have. Not monetarily but worldly worth. Have you heard the story “I cried because I had no shoes until I met a man who had no feet” However bad your situation is, there is always someone in a worse situation than you? Count your blessings and remember that nothing is permanent -the good or the bad.

10. Accept your anxiety.

It is not easy but accept the anxiety. It is half the battle won. You may have inherited anxiety genes from your parents, or it’s a result of your chaotic lifestyle, or just plain hyperactive nerves, accept it. Do not brush it under the carpet either. It is an ongoing battle, and you must work relentlessly every day to bring calmness to your disturbed life.

  • . Douse yourself in Lavender
  • Use Lavender oil to ease your anxiety.
  • · Sprinkle a few drops on a tissue and place it beside your pillow. You will fall asleep faster
  • · Add a few drops to your bath water for a relaxing bath.
  • · Use lavender oil in a diffuser at night. The gentle, woody smell lulls you to fall asleep and stay asleep.

I can vouch for the benefits of a good night’s sleep, exercise, and counting your blessings. Sleep deprivation can do scary things to your health! Not quite there with waking up early, but hopefully I can reset my sleep-wake schedule soon.
