10 Tips for a Sustainable Lifestyle

What is Sustainable Living?

Sustainable living is a way of life to cut down personal and collective environmental impact. There are many global challenges in this century. Some of them are water shortage, climate change, toxic gases, greenhouse gasses, air pollution and world hunger. The crux here is that most of us, regrettably, do not know how to live sustainably. By utilizing more existing resources at the cost of exhausting the environment and underdeveloped nations. The carbon footprints are proof of how many pollutants we trigger off and how many raw materials we use. The amount of all our ecological footprint stems from how we work, live, travel, relax, what we buy, and how we buy. Being environmentally aware or getting brownie points socially does not mean you are sustainable. These 10 Tips for a Sustainable Lifestyle are just a tip of the iceberg.

Here are 10 Tips for a Sustainable Lifestyle-

1. Buy Local Produce

Produce that is transported, by trucks, flights or ships is poor at carbon footprints. Also, opt for seasonal food which is produced around you. These are economical and non-polluting.

Flexitarian

2. Turn into a Flexitarian

A flexitarian is one who eats meat, fish or poultry rarely and his diet is mostly vegetarian. Truly, our diet accounts for one-third of our carbon footprint. In reality, meat-based food makes up 80% of all meals. Animals don’t live on air.  They need tremendous amount f water, which further acts as a. pollutant to groundwater. Their fodder cultivation devours prized land. The effective way to increase your environmental footprint is to keep away from or if not cut down the intake of animal-based foods.

3. Say aye to tap water and nay to bottled water

If the tap water in Germany is perfectly safe then opt for that. It’s fresh, cool, always on hand and easy on the pocket.  There is no need to lug cartons, buy plastic barrels or return deposit kegs. Make your sparkling water at home or even flavoured water which is easy to make and thirst-quenching.

4.Shop wisely and conserve food

10 tips to a sustainable lifestyle

Wasting less food also comes under living green or sustainable living. Food waste is a global crisis.  Shop prudently and buy only those items that you will use. Just hoarding food in the pantry and then chucking it out after expiry is a total waste. Use a shopping list to buy what you really need. If you have food that you are going to throw in the trash, instead, distribute it to the needy.

5. Go organic

Sustainability involves environmental impact social as well as economic and social outcomes. Equitably produced foods like chocolate, coffee assist to confirm that money ends up with the manufacturers of these products. Buy organic,  to reduce your carbon footprint and help environmentally friendly food manufacturers.

10 Tips for a Sustainable Lifestyle

6.Limit your flying

You know that air travel unquestionable increase your carbon footprint. Travel overseas is impossible without flying. But for local travel, if there is a train then hop onto that.  Air travel is the means of transport that is extremely harmful to the climate.. Do you recognize that air travel is affordable as environmental destruction is not added to the price?

 7. Reduce your Power Utilization

Use Less power

There are a plethora of home and kitchen gadgets. Your electric hob, microwave,  oven, refrigerator, hoover, washing machine, dishwasher and added electrical appliances guzzle resources when manufactured and during usage it is power. Buy an appliance or gadget if you really need it. Check the gadgets for energy labels before purchasing it.  Switch to LED’s which will save power and money. This way you can lessen the eco-balance of your merchandise and consequently your carbon footprint.

8. Cook and wash up cleverly

Cook judiciously using less power or gas. Cover the pot while heating water. It will heat faster. so that it heats faster. If you are baking a dish in the oven, try to cook something else with it like potato wedges or grilled veggies to save power. When washing dishes by hand use water scrupulously. When using the dishwater, fill it to capacity and use the economy programme.

9. Lower plastic waste

Say No To Plastic

Plastic wrapping is all over the markets. Large or small food or toys, cosmetics or electronics are packed in plastic. Say no to plastic and carry a  shopping bag from home or just carry unpackaged goods. Edible liquids like soup are also packed in cheap plastic bags which actually make the food toxic. Segregate your waste. The green bins for biodegradable waste, the blue for non-biodegradable and the yellow for paper and glass.

10. Clothes and Laundry

Buy clothes made from environmentally safe fibres like cotton, wool, silk and jute. Say no to synthetic fibres. When doing your laundry, pack the washing machine to the fullest to save on energy.
