10 Ways of Fostering Positive Mental Health

10 Ways of Fostering Positive Mental Health

Let us talk about positive mental health for a change. You don’t need to be mentally ill to talk about mental health. Everyone needs sound mental health. The times are uncertain and everyone is going through some stress. As we grow older, our physical health is weakening and our mental health also nose dives. Most older people suffer from stress or depression. Let me share 10 Ways of Fostering Positive Mental Health.

Fortunately, there are many ways that you can foster positive mental health and combat some challenges that come with retirement years.

What is positive mental health?

Being mentally healthy is primarily the existence of positive attributes and characteristics, such as a feeling of resolve, gladness, sustaining gratifying bonds, and living life to the fullest.

Good mental health is when individuals can-

  • Comprehend their own potential
  • Keep the muscles working
  • Manage the normal stresses of day-to-day life.
  • Be community-centric by participating actively in the community.
  • Being mentally and psychologically well

10 Ways of Fostering Positive Mental Health and adopt a more positive mental attitude

10 Ways of Fostering Positive Mental Health
  1. Keep a close watch on your physical health

A healthy mind is a healthy body is a truth, as both are co-related. You can’t feel good mentally if your physical requirements are awry. Can you feel good on an empty stomach? Exercise keeps mental health grievances at bay as it leads to the discharge of endorphins. This leads to a feel-good factor and gives energy. Regular exercise can also help you sleep better and give you a good night’s sleep.

2. Have a Healthy Network

Man is basically a social animal. Even introverts are social creatures, and even the most introverted seek those of their own kind. Long-distance relationships are surviving, but the desire for genuine conversations and proximity to a physical meeting only can take the relationship forward.

  1. Be Positive to boost your Mental Health

There is a connection between expending positive words and positive mental health. When you’re feeling low, you tumble into a negative mode. The mind then switches only to the negative and pushes the positive thoughts to the back of the mind. Consciously, cajole the mind to spout positive things. Tackle them one by one. Every negative thought generates a positive one.

Value Yourself
  1. Value Yourself

Be your own favourite. Treat yourself kind-hearted and do not deprecate yourself. Indulge in some “ME” time. Dabble in your hobbies-play wordle, dance, or learn some music. Indulge yourself at the spa or treat yourself to great food.

5. Good people should be like your armour

Stay away from toxic people. Build a strong network with family and friends. Socialising is very important, as none of us can survive alone. On holidays and weekends, make plans for a weekend trip, picnic, the movies, the city club, or just an informal chat. This would keep you chirpy and mentally healthy.

Feel good and cope well

10 Ways of Fostering Positive Mental Health

  1. Brush up your coping skills

These days, stress is a part of life and coping with it is the only way to tackle it. Deep breathing is a great way to destress. Polish your pranayama and meditation skills. Chant, pray, or do Relaxation to clear your mind and see the world as a great place to live in. Anticipate the stress symptoms and do not stay alone. Get out of the house and take a walk or walk your dog. The fresh air will do a load of good. Laughter is really the best medicine so, binge-watch stand-up comedies and try to have a smiling countenance. Nobody likes to be around a grumpy person.

  1. Set Attainable Goals

Write your goals and plans in a diary. Below that, note down the timeline and how you are going to achieve them. Could be academically, professionally, and personally. Tick off each point as and when you achieve it. This will keep you buoyed up and make you realize your self-worth.

  1. Avoid alcohol and other drugs

Alcohol is used to drown all sorrows. Have it in moderation and do not get sozzled. These days, drugs are the sure-shot way to keep you in a stupor as long as the effect lasts Once the withdrawal symptoms kick in the desperate hunt for the next fix, starts. Alcohol and drugs are not a solution for a stressed mind. Instead, they only intensify the problem.

Dark Chocolate
  1. Dark Chocolate

This one is a personal favourite. Pop in some dark chocolate chunks every few days. Chocolate gives a feel-good factor and enhances brainpower. Theobromine, flavonoids, and caffeine, together heighten awareness and mental skills,

10. Practice forgiveness

Let the grudges fly free in the sky. Forgive all those who have stepped on your toes. When you forgive, you free yourself from toxicity. You will also have a feeling that people who forgive have a contented life and better mental health.10 Ways of Fostering Positive Mental Health are doable.

Very well compiled Harjeet ji. Following this lifestyle is not impossible, although it might seem a little difficult at first. For example practice forgiveness. How important it is for good mental health but not easy. I so hope we could all be more forgiving.

A beautiful post. There is no quick and easy solution but a journey. We need to value ourselves instead of self-deprecating behavior. It is not easy but is a step to better mental health.

Such an important post! Mental health has been a topic often ignored, and finally it has found a place of its own. I totally agree to all these points. Specially it is seen that people get addicted to alcohol to deal with stress. That’s so wrong.

Mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel, and act. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make choices. Mental health is important at every stage of life, from childhood and adolescence through adulthood.
