10 World Heritage & Historical Sites of India

This is the 23rd post for  #BlogchatterA2Z 2021 powered by Blogchatter. W for World. Glorious history and beautiful heritage sites are a few attributes that add to the Uniqueness of Incredible India. The country has witnessed the rule of various dynasties and rulers. There are numerous architectural splendours dotted throughout India. There 10 World Heritage & Historical Sites of India are recognized and listed as World Heritage sites by UNESCO. Cultural significance is one of the major factors that play a crucial role in the listing of these sites as World Heritage Sites.

Here is a small rundown of a few historical sites of India. Along with being popular, are renowned for providing a clear glimpse of the glorious past of India. These structures have also contributed to the architectural marvel in the country.

Agra Fort in Agra

After the Taj Mahal, Agra Fort is another major attraction in Agra The fort is listed in the World Heritage Site by UNESCO for its unique architecture and cultural significance. Mughal Emperor Akbar declared Agra as the capital of the Mughal Dynasty. In 1156, the construction of the fort began and in 1605 it was finally accomplished. The massive fort sprawls over an area of 2.5 km and is built using red sandstone. The fort is built in a semi-circular plane with massive walls with a height of 70 ft. Massive Bastions are also an important feature of the fort.

There are about 500 buildings in the fort that are praised for their excellent blend of Mughal and Persian style of architecture. Additionally, there also are a few structures in the fort that are inspired by the Gujarat and Bengal style of architecture. Some of the major attractions inside the fort are Diwan-i-Khas (Hall of Private Audience), Diwan-i-Am (Hall of Public Audience), Anguri Bagh, Pearl Mosque, Khas Mahal, Naubat Khana (Drum House), Jahangiri Mahal, and Golden Pavilions.

In India, Ajanta Caves are regarded as one of the popular heritage sites to visit and explore the exquisiteness. The sculptures and carvings in the caves win the heart of visitors and leave them spellbound with a fine finish. These caves are ideally Buddhist temples and are listed as one of the popular World Heritage Sites by UNESCO. These caves are situated near the city of Aurangabad (Maharashtra) and were built between the 2nd century BC and 6th century AD.

In Ajanta, there are 29 caves praised for amazing paintings. These paintings represent the story of Jatakas and Buddhism. Thus, to make the paintings look beautiful and pleasing to the eyes, herbal colours were used. There also are impressive sculptures and statues of Lord Buddha available in various posses. These sculptures in the caves were made using hammer and chisels.

Amer Fort or Amber Fort is one of the must-visit tourist attractions in Jaipur. This World Heritage Site is built in the medieval Rajput style of architecture.  Raja Man Singh I of the Kachhwaja dynasty initiated the construction of the fort in 1592. Later, the construction of the fort was accomplished by Raja Jai Singh. The complete construction of the Amber Fort took about two centuries. Marble and red sandstone are used in the construction of the fort. Maotha Lake, in front of the fort, is one of the major attractions here. The lake acts as a mirror and reflects a mirror and creates a great view for visitors.

The fort may look old, rough and craggy from outside, but the interiors leave the visitors spellbound with the intricacy and unique carvings. These carvings showcase an ideal specimen of the blend of Rajput and Muslim schools of art. Moreover, some of the major attractions of the fort are Jai Mandir, Kali Temple, Shila Devi Temple, Diwan-I-Aam, Diwan-E-Khas, and Ganesh Pol. The panoramic view of the city of Jaipur from the top of the Amber Fort is also breathtaking for the visitors.

Bodhgaya in Bihar

One of the popular Buddhist pilgrimage sites in India is Bodhgaya in Bihar, It is one of the popular Buddhist pilgrimage sites in India. The attraction is popular as this is the place where Lord Buddha achieved the state of nirvana. Formerly, Bodhgaya was also renowned as Bodhimanda, Sambodhi, Uruvela, and Vajrasana. Visitors from all across the globe visit Bodhgaya to witness the religious fervour and explore the rich cultural heritage. Due to the tropical climate, the best time to visit Bodhgaya is between October and March.

The region is dotted with numerous religious shrines and monuments that are must-visit for visitors. The architecture and grandeur of the temples and shrines also win the heart of visitors. Some of the popular tourist attractions in Bodhgaya are Mahabodhi Temple, Bodhi Tree, Arimeshlochana, Tibetan Mahayana Monastery, Chankaramana, Niranjana River, Ratnagar, Vajrasana, and Mohanta Monastery.

In Rajasthan, Dilwara Temples are listed amidst the top tourist attractions.  Situated in Mount-Abu, With Aravalli ranges in the backdrop, Dilwara Temples are an important Jain pilgrimage centre. The magnificent temples were built between the 11th and 13th centuries AD. Marble is majorly used in the construction of the temples. The awe inspiring carvings and grand architecture have also won the heart of the visitors.

A high wall surrounds the temple entrance, which is richly carved with Rajasthani architectural style. There are five main temples in the complex, namely Vimal Vasahi and Pithalhar (both devoted to 1st Jain Tirthankara Lord Rishabh), Mahavir Swami Temple (devoted to the Lord Mahavira), Luna Vasahi Temple (devoted to the 22nd Jain Tirthankara Neminatha), and Khartar Vasahi Temple (devoted to the 23rd Jain Tirthankara Parshva). Don’t forget to add these temples on your next Rajasthan trip.

Gwalior in Madhya Pradesh

Gwalior (Madhya Pradesh) is a popular travel destination for visitors wanting to explore some of the exquisite heritage and historic sites. To enjoy the visit and witness the real charm of the attractions, visit during festivals such as Holi and Diwali is advisable. As the city experiences a sub-tropical climate, the best time to visit is between October and Mid-March. There also is proper connectivity available to reach from any part of India through air, rail or road.

Local transportation system is also available to ensure easy movement in and around the city. Some of the major tourist attractions in Gwalior are The Fort, Gurudwara Data Bandhi Chhod, Sun City, Man Mandir Palace, Sarod Ghar, Gujari Mahal, Gopachal, Ghaus Mohammed’s Tomb, Sun Temple, and Jai Vilas Palace and Museum. Moreover, Gwalior is also a paradise for shopaholics as they can buy interesting stuff such as hand-woven carpets, Chanderi sarees, lacquerware, wall hangings, dokra figurines, tribal jewellery, and more.

When visiting popular historic and heritage sites of India, India Gate is one name that one cannot afford to miss out on. Built to commemorate 9000 brave soldiers who died during the disastrous World War I and Afghan War, Indian Gate is recognized as the largest war memorials in India. For the local people of Delhi and also for tourists who come here on daily basis, it enacts as the primary landmark in the city.

Standing tall and proud, over 42 m in height, India Gate, built by Edward Lutyen, marks as a popular picnic spot for locals as well. It is truly an emblem of architectural delights. The shallow dome-shaped bowl on top has been engraved with the names of thousands of soldiers who dedicated their lives to the country. The Amar Jawan Jyoti here burns all around the year to pay reverence to war heroes who died during the Indo-Pak war.

one of the most intriguing heritage sites of India is Hampi in Karnataka. The rich culture of Hampi along with the stunning sculptures here has given a special charm to this place. Located alongside the Tungabhadra River, Vijayanagara Empire ruins are major tourist sites here. Most of the heritage monuments here are included as UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The tourism industry plans various sightseeing tours so that one could explore the rich history of India. Some primary tourist attractions here include Mustard Ganesh, House of Victory, Vithala Temple Complex, King’s Balance, Mahanavami Dibba, Lotus Mahal, Noblemen’s Palace and Virupaksha Temple.

Designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Konark in Orissa is one of the grandest architectural sites of ancient India. The 13th Century Konark Temple in Orissa was built to worshipping the Sun God. Designed in the shape of the chariot of the Sun God, it pays tribute to the marvellous pace of Surya or Sun God. Popularly among tourists, it is called as “Black Pagoda” because of the elegant black granite rocks from which it is built.

The best feature of this temple is the 2 lion statues, constructed at the entrance, that are destroying war elephants. Another major tourist activity here is the glorious Konark Dance Festival. It is held every year in the month of February, luring classical dancers, musicians, artists, etc. from all parts of the world.

    These are some of the places, one should visit and explore in his/ her lifetime.
    India has many heritage sites with historical value and glad you have listed some of the important places in this post.
    I have yet to see Ajanta caves, Bodhgaya and Hampi.

    Wow all these places are so amazing and shows that how rich is our ancient Indian culture . I had visited few of these and would love to visit all, when get a chance to visit India. hope things get normal soon and we can enjoy our normal life and travel activities without fear and anxiousness.
