Benefits of Growing your own Produce
- Fresh produce from your home kitchen garden will keep your menu healthy and tasty. Most veggies we use every day in the kitchen are the easiest to farm. Carrots, tomatoes, okra, ginger, turmeric and most leafy greens are easy to grow at home.
- Is there any comparison between the taste and crunch of a home-grown tomato and a store brought one? The vitamin content in a fresh veggie is much higher than a day’s old grocery vegetable.
- Your grocery bill is going to dip. Home grown vegetables are much cheaper than organic store bought ones.
- Growing your own food gives you a great sense of achievement and increases one’s self worth.
- A garden requires lots of patience, hard work and attention. But growing your own gives you great satisfaction and peace of mind. You know exactly where your meal came from – and the pride that you cultivated something wholesome and worthy, from your garden to your kitchen table.
My garden has many vegetables and fruits growing, organically. I am not yet self-sufficient but I am in the process of growing as many varieties of vegetables that I can. My prized possession is growing Kale. A superfood that is growing and flourishing. Another favourite is Mango Ginger.
What is Mango Ginger?
- It is neither related to a Mango nor to ginger. Instead, it belongs to the Turmeric family –Curcuma amada. A few years ago, I randomly sowed a rhizome of mango ginger in my backyard and forgot all about it. In a couple of months, I saw long leaves sprouting from it; it takes almost a year to harvest. Now every year, I have a hoard of mango ginger to harvest during the harvest festival of Sankranti.
- The rhizomes are akin to ginger but have a raw mango flavour. It is known by different names; Ambe Halad in Marathi, Amada in Bengali and Aam Haldi in Hindi.
- It relieves pain, digestive problems and is good for diabetics.
Luckily it is not fibrous like ginger and can be sliced and chopped easily.
This year’s harvest has been huge and I have distributed most of it to family and friends. My share has gone into a preserve with just lemon juice and salt.
I remember my mom chopping long slivers of ginger and dunking them in a lime solution with slit green chillies. I used the same recipe to make this Mango Ginger preserve.
Do look up the Andhra style Mamidi Allam Pachadi or Pickle which is much more spicy and tangy.

I have Amba Halat at home. It is very good for healing or when used as medicine. Didn’t know it is called Mango Ginger. Thanks for the recipe. I have it in powered form.
I didn’t know what mango ginger was until today, even though it has a name in Bengali! Very interesting.
Huh I could never have guessed that mango ginger had nothing to do with either! Now my mouth is watering to taste this preserve 😀
I am smiling Suchita 🙂 It is really mouth watering.
Going through the heading I was wondering where did you Mango in this season, later got to know there is no mango and ginger in the whole picture😃. honestly I have never heard about Aam Haldi. But Yes in a similar way my mom used to make ginger chilli pickle in winters with the mixture of just lemon and salt. Year 2020 has given me a new interest of growing veggies in my own garden, This year I grow chilli, tomato, pudina, belle pepper, cilantro, okra in my patio. The happiness of harvesting them is surreal.
Thank you Archana. Indeed it is a real treasure. Homegrown is always a treat to grow and eat
I simply love Mango-Ginger and this is such an easy recipe to follow! Thanks for sharing, Harjeet. Hope to make it sometime soon. Shall tag you when I do.
I also add homegrown chilly (spicy variety) pieces and few big amla pieces in that pickle Harjeet. Every December, I have to make this pickle at home, otherwise, my family would be very angry 😅
I am really bad at making pickles but this recipe looks great!
Wow Harjeet you are a complete chef I must say. You grow your own veggies and make it fresh. This is amazing and inspiring as well. Very soon I am moving to my own house..will you be my mentor….I would like to have my own kitchen garden.
I first thought you are giving out the recipe for mango+ginger pickle.. The instant pickle of raw mango and ginger is too good to be devoured with paranthas. However this mango ginger variety is absolutely new to me. Never heard of it. As u mentioned, it must be really tasty and nutritious. Thanks for sharing such new things with us.
Love your recipe. Would for sure try to harvest it. And as you said, you would be glad and proud of the little harvest from garden. Absolutely!!
Oh this is one of my favorites. Tamilians make a proper spicy pickle with it. My grandmom used to make it very well….so yum! I think Priya pickles now has this flavour….not sure if it available only in the south though.
I so connect with the sense of accomplishment and happiness that gardening brings. Especially when you grow food that can be used by you. Unfortunately I now live in an apartment and miss those days when we used to grow Jackfruit, Mango, Bananna, many greens etc. I now only have a small kitchen garden in my balcony with tomatoes, chilli, mint, basil, palak, lemon. Hope to someday go back to living in a home with a yard so I can grow more stuff.
That looks mouthwatering. We make this preserve a lot, especially with small white onions and ginger. Homegrown produce is always best. We have a small kitchen garden where we grow our herbs. The flavour is unmatchable.
oo. i just recently got some mango ginger from our local supermarket and I made pickle with them !! so yummy.. the brine solution pickle too sounds good
We have recently started with ginger, spinach, tomatoes and coriander. Rightly said, home grown veggies are fresh and healthy. I didn’t know about mango ginger. Will try to get some here. Thanks for the recipe.

Never heard of Mango ginger thanks for sharing all about this. Home grown vegetables are always best. This year we are planning to grow fresh vegetables in our garden too. Waiting for summer season as can’t grow anything outdoors in winters in the UK.
I have grown Marigold, coriander, spinach, aloevera. I can easily relate the happiness of making things from home grown plants. When I have guava tree in my garden then I used to make veggie of it.
This mango ginger variety is absolutely new to me. Never heard of it. This looks absolutely nutritious. Thanks for sharing .
