Sabut Masoor dal or Brown Lentils Recipe

Sabut Masoor dal or Brown Lentils Recipe

Today, I’m sharing a straightforward recipe for Sabut Masoor Dal, also known as Brown Lentils. In Punjabi cuisine, lentils are a staple, each cooked uniquely. Packed with healthy proteins, lentils are essential for a balanced vegetarian diet. While Punjabi dishes can be rich and time-consuming, they can also be incredibly simple and quick to prepare. Here is Sabut Masoor dal or Brown Lentils Recipe.

How to Cook Sabut Masoor dal or Brown Lentils

Sabut Masoor Dal uses basic ingredients found in every kitchen. This brown lentil dish, tempered with cumin, onion, green chili, and tomatoes, results in a wholesome gravy. Like Dal Makhani and Kadhi, it tastes even better the next day as the flavors meld together. This dal pairs perfectly with rice, roti, or whole wheat bread.

For a richer version, add two tablespoons of fresh cream. The consistency can be adjusted to your liking, but it’s typically served medium-thick—neither too thick nor too thin.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Lentils
  • 1 large tomato, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon Cumin seeds
  • 2 Green chilies, slit
  • 1 teaspoon red chili powder
  • 2 tablespoons Ghee (or clarified butter, or oil)
  • ÂĽ teaspoon turmeric
  • 4 cups Water
  • Salt, to taste
  • Fresh coriander leaves, chopped

Method

  1. Cook the Lentils
    • Wash the lentils thoroughly.
    • In a pressure cooker, combine the lentils, four cups of water, salt, and turmeric.
    • Cook for at least five whistles. Ensure the dal is well-cooked and blended.
    • Transfer the cooked lentils to a serving dish.
  2. Prepare the Tempering
    • Heat ghee in a pan (ghee enhances the flavor, but you can use oil).
    • Add cumin seeds and let them splutter.
    • Add slit green chilies and sautĂ© until golden brown.
    • Add chopped tomatoes and stir until the onion and tomatoes blend.
    • Add red chili powder and mix well.
  3. Combine and Serve
    • Pour the tempering over the cooked dal.
    • Garnish with chopped coriander leaves.
    • Serve hot with roti, rice, or bread.

Tips

  • Leftover Dal: Add any leftover dal to wheat flour, make a dough, and prepare roti for breakfast.
  • Quick and Healthy: Sabut Masoor Dal is a wholesome meal ready in 15 minutes. It’s perfect for a quick and nutritious option.

Enjoy this simple, flavorful Sabut Masoor Dal, a perfect addition to your daily meals with rice or roti.
