Every Indian colony runs on two governments. One is elected, meets twice a year, and fixes nothing. The other exists purely on WhatsApp, was never voted in, and somehow runs the entire building. Its ruler is the Group Admin, and every single neighbourhood in this country has one.

You know the type before you even open the chat. The grey crown next to the name. The 6 AM good morning GIF that arrives before your alarm. The festival rename that hits the group six weeks early, because apparently even “🎊Diwali Vibes🎊” needs a production schedule now.

Someone once joked they listed “WhatsApp Group Admin” as leadership experience on a job interview. Nobody laughed harder than every resident who has ever tried to leave one of these groups quietly, only to be added back within the hour with a stern note that exits aren’t allowed. Bin pagari, full adhikari was written for exactly this person. No badge, no salary, no office, just one blue tick that somehow outranks the entire Residents’ Welfare Association.

The Rules Are Sacred. For You.

Every serious admin pins commandments at the top of the group. No forwards after 10 PM. No politics. No personal chats. These rules are enforced strictly on everyone except the person who wrote them, who forwards three Good Morning videos a day without a flicker of guilt. Question it, and you’ll hear about “special admin privileges,” delivered with the same straight face someone uses to explain why their car never seems to get a challan.

Then There’s the One Who Runs Your Whole Social Life

Some admins stop at notifications. Others go further and quietly become the government of your entire social calendar. In my friend’s community, Silver Orchards, there is a group admin named Vanisree, who runs three groups simultaneously: the residents’ line, the official announcements, and Chic Circle, the kitty party group half the colony is dying to get into.

My friend asked to join Chic Circle in June. She got added in December. Six months, no explanation, no update, just a sudden “Added you!” the week before Christmas, like a visa finally stamped after a very long wait. Nobody questions Vanisree’s timeline in that colony. You simply wait, hope, and occasionally consider bribing her with mathris.

And here’s the part that stings a little. The same women who complain about the wait are the first ones back every kitty afternoon, laughing over Tambola tickets, thoroughly relieved to have made the cut. Because whatever Kamini’s silent vetting process, she has built something most official committees never manage. Groups people actually want to be part of.

The Twist Nobody Admits

For all the power trips, the preening, and the sudden weakness for exclamation marks, these admins are also the first to tell you the water tanker has arrived, the power cut is coming, or the Ganesh visarjan pickup leaves in ten minutes. Exhausting, self-important, occasionally maddening, and somehow the only reason half these colonies function at all.

So the next time you’re stuck waiting for an admin to add you somewhere, don’t take it personally. You’re not being ignored. You’re being vetted by someone who takes her unofficial throne far more seriously than anyone who’s ever actually won an election.
