3 Ways to Teach Children Eco-friendly Habits

If we want the next generation to carry on the banner of eco-friendly living, we need to teach them about eco-friendly living. Catch them young and they will carry on the practice through the rest of their lives. If children learn to value and protect the world they live in, only then they can help to safeguard it for the following generation. They will become staunch supporters for safeguarding nature. Sharing the simplest- 3 Ways to Teach Children About Eco-friendly Habits.

What is the ecosystem?

The earth’s innate collective resources are; plants, animals, atmosphere, land, water and we humans. Every single thing we humans do impacts the world in which we live. We have depleting resources so do we have the power to obliterate or create.  Children are like clay and their minds can be steered to build, nurture, and value our world.

3 Ways to Teach Children Eco-friendly Habits

  1. Cultivate Respect For Nature

When kids are taught to value nature from childhood, they’re plausibly going to carry on the respect for nature, even when they’re older. The best way to start is in your garden, teach them. Encourage your kids to plant seeds and nurture them,  and trees or flowers. Set up attractive birdbaths and birdfeeders-kids will be fascinated with the feathered friends. Encourage them to help you water the plants, refill the birdbath or gather the dry leaves. Simple steps like 3 Ways to Teach Children Eco-friendly Habits are a great start.

After this, make them familiar with the extensive environment outside of your house. They will be thrilled with the beauty. Plan family holidays to sanctuaries, zoos or even the seaside. They will be excited to see diverse animals and their habitat. Teach the kids about soil erosion and how it affects the environment. This will create curiosity and an urge to nurture and preserve our blessed world.

Follow this Chinese Proverb to Teach Them Eco-friendly Methods

“Tell me and I will forget
Show me and I will remember
Involve me and I will understand”

3. Recycle Consistently

Reusing or recycling is one of the simplest actions a single-family and conglomerates can do to lessen the negative effect of humans on the planet. Whilst few factories do recycle, even individuals can make a significant contribution. These days most housing societies have made it mandatory to recycle and separate trash bins.  Ensure that your family follows these rules of the commune; green bin for biodegradable waste, blue for wet waste and black for hazardous waste so that it can be recycled.

When you get into the right recycling practice, inculcate the same habit in your kids. Guide them to segregate assorted recyclables. Tag them along when you go out to dispose of the different containers. Once they grow up, hand over the responsibility of sorting and taking the recyclables. Taking this activity further, get into the habit of composting and using reusable products and add to sustaining the environment.

  1. Be Energy Conscious

You can minimize your carbon footprint by being energy conscious. It is good for Mother Earth and easy on the pocket. Every home, office, industry consumes a lot of energy. This naturally affects the environment negatively. Typically, in most homes, the energy bills are skyrocketing. Children learn by watching their elders and imitating them. If you turn off everything that works on electricity when not in use, they will follow suit.

3 Ways to Teach Children Eco-friendly Habits

Teach Kids to Love Nature

Try to explain and teach the kids why it is essential to conserve energy. Kids think that the energy we use is inexhaustible but if you explain to them that it is imperative to conserve energy, they will realize this. The simplest way to conserve energy is by switching off the lights when you leave the room,  powering off, all the gadgets when not in use.

Encourage children to take on an active role in eco-friendly activities. Get them to grow a  green thumb or support animal rights groups. If all goes well, the kids will transfer their enthusiasm further and forge a new band of eco-fighters. Fortunately, it is quite easy to find ways to conserve energy and help the world to be a better place.

Everything you’ve shared is do-able Harjeet and I too believe that with kids its ‘it’s now or never’ In our society we structkybfollpow garbage segregation n thankfully our kids already know what to put where and for what reason. But yes, they are clumsy in matters of energy conservation. Your post reminded me about how important it is to teach them all these things young.

Loved your post, love to see more and more environment enthusiasts. 😊We follow all these as family and also many more things like we say no to plastic, we don’t use tissue but, a cloth napkin, we carry our own shopping bags, cutlery, water bottles, napkins. We don’t buy until it’s necessary. No impulse buying. I make floor cleaner at home. We save seeds and throw near highways while traveling. 🙂

Both my kids have been taught to respect nature but somehow my 5yr old son has grasped it very well. HE always talks about keeping the planet clean and even tells off people to not throw things on the road if he catches them doing so. It makes me feel so proud.

It is important to teach the next generation if we want them to have any semblance of a good environment. Eco friendly habits are necessary to be inculcated from young itself so that it becomes a way of life for them.
